As the Morristown Salutatorian, Adriania Fanelli worked rigorously over the last four years to maintain her grades and work ethic through a series of commitments to her community and herself. She has been part of more than seventeen extracurricular activities and has volunteered 100 hours of community service since the tenth grade. She also completed four college classes in two years . This year, while going to school full time, she began working part time at the United Helpers Riverledge in order to save for tuition and supplies. She will have finished 100 hours of medical interning at various medical sites for her Allied Health class where she studied pre-medical material. The $500 scholarship from AARP will help cover essential costs as an accepted student at North Country Community College. Adriania plans to become a registered nurse and to stay in the North Country where she will offer her wide range of interests and abilities as a health professional.

AARP Offers Area’s First Local ‘Youth Mental Health First Aid’ Training Similar to ‘First Aid’ and CPR, ‘Mental Health First Aid’ teaches individuals how to help those experiencing mental health challenges or crises. WHO: This training is open to anyone who interacts with young people on a regular basis. Teachers, police officers, parents, human service workers, and any local citizens who would like to be better prepared to support a youth in crisis. Maximum capacity is 25 participants. WHAT: First-ever training for adults on youth mental health first aid in Potsdam. Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis (such as suicidal ideation). Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), eating disorders, and signs of suicidal ideation. WHEN: Saturday, July 15, 2017 from 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM (1-hour break for lunch on your own) COST: $40.00/person (via check or PayPal) Includes participant manual; certificate; drinks; light snacks WHERE: Potsdam Library – 2 Park Street, Potsdam, NY 13676 – Second (2nd) Floor WHY: Mental health challenges – such as those listed above – are shockingly common in the United States. In fact, more than one in five American adults will have a mental health problem in any given year. And suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in adolescents ages 12-18. Because adolescent development is so complicated, signs and symptoms of developing mental health issues are often missed or overlooked. In addition, there continues to be stigma around mental health issues resulting in fewer people seeking out support to assist them in their time of need.
